MICHAEL CULLEN (1946-2020)

Mick and I outside his studio at the Tyrone Guthrie Centre, Co. Monaghan, Ireland where we lived for a year when married. With large painting he did of us, 1996.

His 1997 solo exhibition “Love Stories” was held in three parts: oils at Temple Bar Gallery (several on huge carpets), watercolours at the Taylor Galleries, and prints at the Graphic Studio Gallery. The artwork depicted our marriage and honeymoon in Las Vegas, 1994. A limited edition publication of the same name has 40 pages of paintings.

Paintings featuring me can be found in the Hugh Lane Gallery, IMMA, National Gallery of Ireland, Derry and Strabane Council Offices, and other public and private collections. Wherever the female figure in his paintings has blonde hair, that’s me. My own collection of his work includes the large painting above, smaller works and letters painted over with watercolour images.

Michael Cullen, RHA (1946-2020) was born in Co. Wicklow and studied at the Central School of Art and Design, London and the National College of Art and Design, Dublin. A member of Aosdana and the Royal Hibernian Academy, he had solo exhibitions in many galleries including the Fenderesky, Belfast, Vangard and Triskel Arts Centre, Cork, Temple Bar, Graphic Studio and Project Arts, Dublin. His work is in many private collections as well as public collections including the National Gallery of Ireland, the Hugh Lane Gallery, IMMA, Trinity College Dublin, Ulster Museum et al.

BARBARA FREEMAN

“You’re the silver light on the right,” she told me. The painting was inspired by the artist catching a glimpse of me, through an open door, trying to cheer up an unhappy writer (the late Jimmy Brennan) at the Tyrone Guthrie Centre.

Barbara Freeman was born in London and studied at St Martins and Camberwell Colleges of Art with postgraduate study at the University of Leeds. Living and working in Belfast, she has had over 40 solo exhibitions of paintings, prints and installation works in many countries including Ireland, UK, USA and Germany.
