Traveller TO Wear MEETS O.R. MELLING
New York artist Diana M. Carulli – www.dmcarulli.com – works in sculpture, video installation, photography and book art. Traveller, an interactive sculpture, began in 1977 and was adjusted in size to meet more people as Traveller TO Wear. (TO, transitional object)
In July 23, O.R. Melling met Carulli and Traveller at the Tyrone Guthrie Centre, a residential artists’ retreat in Co. Monaghan, Ireland. There and then, Melling committed to taking a Traveller TO Wear piece on her various travels.
Annaghmakerrig House, Tyrone Guthrie Centre and Farmyard Cottage (self-catering)
Carulli and Melling at the grave of Tyrone Guthrie, Aghabog Church of Ireland, Co. Monaghan. Traveller TO Wear was shaped by Melling into a heart in gratitude to Sir Guthrie.
Tyrone Guthrie was a renowned director of Shakespearean and modern theatre, founding Artistic Director of the Stratford Festival, Ontario, Canada and founder of the Guthrie Theater, Minneapolis, USA. He left his ancestral home at Annaghmakerrig, Co. Monaghan to the Irish state for the establishment of the Tyrone Guthrie Centre for the Arts.
August 2023. Traveller TO Wear at Dún Aoghasa, ancient stone fort on the edge of Inis Mór, the largest of the Aran Islands off the west coast of Ireland. Traveller was shaped as a fan, reminiscent of sea shells. The stone fort is atop massive cliffs overlooking the Atlantic Ocean.
Traveller TO Wear being Celticised in preparation for its journey to Japan, May 2024.
